Are There Standards For Safe Aircraft Covers?

Aircraft Covers is Kennon's only business. Our primary markets are general and military aviation. We have a half a dozen competitors in general aviation and our covers are pretty similar.

When it comes to covers for military aircraft, it is a different ball game. Most military aircraft covers are manufactured by cut and sew shops. Shops that make jeep covers one day and airplane covers the next.   I don't know of anyone of our competitors in the general aviation market that uses some the type materials called for in the specifications for most military covers.  Some are hazardous to the aircraft, others will not hold up in the sun.

We thought that it would be helpful to share with you the generally accepted standards for aircraft covers.

    1. The fabric that covers the windows and paint must be breath.

Nylon, polyethylene, vinyl, are examples of fabrics that don't breath yet they are often used in military aircraft coverings. Acrylic canvas, cotton canvas,  woven polyester, some non-woven fabrics are better choices.

    2. The chemical composition of the fabric must be compatible with the chemical of the acrylic.

Materials that out-gas plasticizers actually change the chemical composition of the acrylic and cloud the acrylic.  So material selection is critically important.

    3. The fabric should be UV resistant.

Acrylic canvas, polyester, and some nonwovens are UV resistant. Nylon is not.

    4. No metal fasteners should be used.

Metal fasteners can and will scratch acrylic and paint and they are totally unnecessary.
